Pantayo Presents: Bronsé
Pantayo is an all-women kulintang ensemble based in Toronto. They combine percussive metallophones and drums from kulintang traditions of Southern Philippines with electronic and synth-based grooves. Pantayo explores the possibility of kulintang through their experiences as diasporic Filipinas.
In their workshop, Pantayo digs deeper into themes of diversity, inclusion, migration, self-esteem, leadership, identity, and how we they use music as a tool to connect to tradition while also carving a unique space for themselves in Canadian music. Participants will receive an overview of historical and contemporary kulintang music, how Pantayo translates these learnings into their work, learn about current kulintang groups in the diaspora, and then will break off into groups for a hands-on kulintang lesson with Pantayo members.
